The Slashes and the Thread (GWTW249)

As I visit websites of creators and artists, I can’t help but notice all of the slashes: artist/writer/leader/executive/storyteller…you get the idea. Sometimes there are a small handful of refined identifiers, but more often than not, there is a long list of words describing who this person is and what they do. While I’m fascinated with how people can get everything done in their list of personal descriptors, I’m more curious with something deeper: what is the thread that weaves through all of the slashes and brings them together?

Quotes from the Episode:

“If you want to catch a little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper.” – David Lynch, Catching the Big Fish

“It is by going down into the abyss that we discover the treasures of life. When you stumble, there lies your treasure.” – Joseph Campbell

“…one’s inner world determines his or her external reality.” – Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind by Scott Barry Kaufman & Carolyn Gregoire

5 Ways to Focus on the Threads Instead of the Slashes:

  1. Go deeper.
  2. Get personal.
  3. Be authentic.
  4. Embrace the mess.
  5. “Get busy living or get busy dying.” – The Shawshank Redemption
