Mentor, Be Mentored (GWTW38)

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be mentored. I wanted to be told who I was, what I was good at, what I should be doing. It never worked out that way. Recently, I sat down over coffee with a creative professional just starting out and I had the realization that being a mentor actually gave me the information I longed for. I caught a glimpse of who I am. I heard my voice. I saw what I should be doing. In this episode of Getting Work To Work, I focus on what it means to be a mentor, three tips for young creative professionals to build a mentor relationship, and three tips for creative professional to being a mentor to others.

3 Tips to Building a Mentor Relationship

  1. Don’t wait to be discovered, ask someone you admire to coffee. If they are not local, send an email asking if they would be open to answering questions in email or on Skype.
  2. Ask as many questions you can think of. Before you are done, ask if they would be open to answering any additional questions through email.
  3. Follow up on any advice or resources given.

3 Tips to Being a Mentor to Other Creative Professionals

  1. Be approachable to those just starting out.
  2. Be gracious if people seeking a mentor relationship doesn’t approach you the way they should.
  3. Be prepared to learn just as much as those reaching out will.
