Take the Time to Find the Feeling (GWTW408)

What do you do when you want and need to come up with ideas and all you can see before you is the dreaded blank slate? This morning, I turned to Instagram and started mindlessly scrolling through an impressive display of other people creating amazing work. Not really the best way to start the day, but here I was, waiting for something to speak to me. It didn’t take long for something to trigger me: another amazing short documentary by a prolific producer. I don’t even remember what it was about, but I remember the feelings: “You’re not worthy. You suck. Why are you wasting your time? You don’t believe in what you are doing. You might as well give up.” As the volume of inferiority crescendoed, so did my creative inner voice: well, you needed an idea? Here is the spark of an idea. Time to close Instagram, run with it, and see where you end up. You ready to go on a journey?

Quotes mentioned in this episode:

From Becoming by Michelle Obama: “For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end…. It’s all a process, steps along a path. Becoming requires equal parts patience and rigor. Becoming is never giving up on the idea that there’s more growing to be done” (p. 419).
